Gabriel's Lament
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (June, 1987)
Average review score:

Another o.p. GemThis wonderful book was nominated ('shortlisted") for England's Booker Prize, a major British literary award. Gabirel Harvey is the son of an elderly, emotionally tyrannical father, and a sprightly young mother. Oswald and Amy are mismatched. The live a scraping-by existence in Postwar Britain, (the novel ends in the early 1980s). until Oswald comes into a fortune.Instead of being delighted with the money, Amy chafes under Oswald's flowering pretensions. She leaves abrubtly just before Gabriel's thirteenth birthday.Gabirel descends into a proverbial decline, but through common sense and wit, collects a great deal of experience, while waiting to hear directly from his mother.Bailey's description of London and its characters is insighful and zesty. We lean about Oswald's secrets. He claims to be an honest man, but it is revelaed near the end that he is anything but honest. This book is a well balanced combination of humor and sadness.

Gay Politics, Urban Politics
Published in Digital by Columbia University Press ()
Average review score:

Identity politics livesBailey, a political scientist who until his untimely death in 2001 was one of the foremost authorities on gay politics and voting patterns in large cities, blends data with detailed studies of New York, Chicago, San Francisco, and Birmingham, Alabama, to illustrate the role gays and lesbians play as distinctive members of urban political communities, where they have traditionally been part of liberal coalitions. Bailey argues that the ends of urban-based gay political involvement have had more to do with the definition and assertion of identity than with influencing the levers of economic policy-making. At a time when "identity politics" as a mode of analysis has fallen out of fashion in academic gay studies, Bailey compiles an impressive array of evidence that identity politics, at least in the urban setting, actually is becoming more important as municipal politicians seek to build coalitions and consensus.

Gunkholing very comprehensiveThis new edition has the local information I was looking for. It has detailed information on anchorages, local marinas - with contact information - local people, history, and lots of pictures of where you may be planning to go. It is informative on a number of related subjects, and was very entertaining. A must for anyone planning to cruse in the San Juan Islands. It's my most used book on the subject.

Hamilton Bailey's Physical Signs: Demonstrations of Physical Signs in Clinical Surgery
Published in Paperback by Arnold Publication (December, 1997)
Average review score:

excellent photographical atlas for medical practitionersThe subtitle of the book "Demonstrations of Physical Signs in Clinical Surgery" is misleading and may inhibit purchasers. Quite the contrary, this book which depicts photos of physicial signs (xrays, too) and describes diseases is applicable for all specialities (including primary care) and for nearly most subspeciality fields. The book is organized into 40 chapters whose names capsulize an anatomical structure (skin, orbit, arterial disease, etc.). This is the extent to which a surgeon may need to organize his/her information. The content of the chapters, however, is applicable for every practicing physician, nurse, PA, etc. To illustrate the width and depth of the clinical signs, listed below are photo samples found in this volume: - palmer erythema of patient with chronic liver failure (p 8) - raised jugular venous pressure (p 21) - Down's Syndrom features including Brushfield spots (p 42) - tinea pedis (p 80) - leprosy (p 110) - nodular malignant melanoma (p 145) - iris coloboma (p 184) - TB abscess from deep cervical lymph chain (p 219) - xray of PDA (p 264) - xray of caecal volvuls (p 309) - genital warts (p 355) - senile kyphosis (p 397) - Erb's palsy (p 413) - cubitus varus (p 447) - squamous cell carcinoma of the heel (p 498) Relevant psychiatric, ACLS and HIV/AIDS photos and topics are covered in this edition. Text accompanies each and every photo. Many topics, pyrexia and necrotizing enterocolitis, for example are discussed in text only. I recommend this book highly for all medical fields.
